BODY IMAGE

mirror reflection.jpg

Body image is how we see ourselves, yet it is more than just a mental picture of what we look like.  Our body image is the personal relationship we have with our body.  It is made up of our thoughts, feelings, beliefs and perceptions about our physical appearance.

  • Do you look in the mirror and hate the person staring back at you?

  • Do you worry about what others think of your appearance?

  • Do you dislike more about your body than you like?

  • Do your looks determine your self worth?

  • Do you avoid activities or situations because you are conscious of how you look?

  • Do you spend a lot of time and money in trying to change the way you look?

  • Do your feelings about your looks get in the way of accepting yourself or enjoying everyday life?

  • Do you have difficulty accepting the body you live in?

If so then you may have a negative body image.

A negative body image can impact our quality of life. It can lower self-esteem and make us feel anxious in social situations where we feel we may be judged on what we look like. If you don’t like your body you may find it hard to like you.

Having a negative body image:

  • Can diminish your sense of how accepted you feel you around others.

  • Can cause you to feel anxious in social situations

  • Can make you more likely to feel that others don’t accept your looks.

  • Interfere with intimacy in relationships.

  • Can be intertwined with depression
